Year 3 Weekly Update Week commencing 22nd June 2020
This is a very special time of year because both teachers and children look back over the year and think about all the good things that have happened and all the progress that has been made. The children normally write a few paragraphs about how their year has been to go in their reports. As it is not possible for us to do this with the children this year, could you talk to your child about their year instead? We have attached a prompt sheet to help.

3TS and 3B –Myths and Legends We have enjoyed reading your ‘setting’ descriptions and looking at your ‘Excalibur’ drawings. We hope you enjoyed reading the story ‘The Lady of the Lake’ and how Arthur came to acquire the powerful sword and scabbard. This week we would like you to read or ask an adult to read you the story ‘ Morgan Le Fay’. In this story you will hear how Arthur’s wicked sister plans to trick him and become Queen herself. Now that you have read a number of King Arthur stories, we would like you to plan your own King Arthur adventure story using characters and settings you have already read about. There is a story planning sheet to help you – use your completed ‘setting planning sheet’ from last week, to help as well. We would also like you to design your own Coat of Arms. This was a way of identifying knights and each Coat of Arms was personal to them. Look at the Coat of Arms power point first, then think of something personal to you that you could draw – maybe your initials or a hobby or sport you enjoy. Think of the colours you might use as they had a special significance. These links will help you We really look forward to reading your story plans and looking at your ‘Coat of Arms’ designs! |
Please use Spelling Shed to practise – we’ve uploaded this week’s words. Miss Booth’s Spelling Group – Look at the ‘Spelling Rules for Plurals’ sheet. Read the rules carefully and look at the examples. Try to find at least three examples of each different way of spelling plurals! Spelling Rules for Plurals sheet Miss Thompson’s Group – Words with short ‘u’ sound spelt with ‘ou’ Mrs Stephens’ Group – Creating adverbs using the suffix ’ly’ Mrs Wicks’ Group – Fun ways to practice spellings Reading Reading to and listening to your child read is so important. Please could you listen to your child read at least 3 times a week. The reading material can be anything from books, comics, game instructions to food labelling. This can still be recorded in your child’s reading record and initialled. Grammar The BBC Bitesize website has some fun, useful lessons which the children can enjoy – Have a look at ‘Alliteration’ this week (18th June) at https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zc3v6g8 If you want to challenge yourself even further you can also look at ‘Using Proofreading Skills (13th May) to really polish up your skills! |

Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve We are delighted to tell you that the car parks and toilets at Gibraltar Point are now open to the public again! (The parking charge is £2 for 2 hours or £5 for the whole day.) The Visitor Centre café is also open for take away hot drinks. It is a beautiful place and well worth a visit if you are able to find the time. (June is the perfect time to see orchids there, in the grassy areas in the dunes!)
This is our last session learning about Gibraltar Point. Sand dunes are a very important feature at Gibraltar Point as they protect the saltmarsh. Watch this video to learn how they form: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5W3_y5_3w9A Imagine you are going to visit Gibraltar Point. Can you use all of your new knowledge about Lincolnshire and Gibraltar Point itself to plan your trip? Look back at the map of Lincolnshire. Which roads would you use? Which towns would you pass through? Look at the Gibraltar Point map. Where would you choose to park? What would you go and look at? Which way would you walk? Can you plan a route? Maybe you can even plan what you would like for a picnic lunch, and where you would like to eat it? |
Light and Shadows This week we are looking at why our shadows, when made by the Sun, seem to move during the day. 1. Make a human sundial and use your shadow to tell the time! Similar to the last activity in last week’s science plan, stand in the sun and ask someone to draw around your feet and then your whole shadow. Try to do this every hour, on the hour, making sure you stand in the same place, and write the time inside every shadow outline, so you know where your shadow was at which time. It’s supposed to be much sunnier this week, so you should be able to manage it! Now, if you stand in the same place, you will be able to see roughly what time it is by looking where your shadow is! Do you notice anything else about your shadow? Watch these video clips to help you understand: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z6fnvcw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SN1BOpLZAs You can also show this using a torch and a ruler, or similar tall object. Find a dark room, stand your object on a table, (use a lump of blu-tak if you are using a ruler), and pretend the torch is the Sun. Turn it on and move it slowly from low down to high above your object, always pointing towards your object. How does the shadow move? Can you use diagrams to help you explain why, and how, shadows made by the Sun move? |
In school we have been completing the daily live workout by Joe Wicks at 9 – 9:30am. It’s a great way to start the day. You can always catch up with the live recordings later or look at his 5 or 8 minute workouts on his YouTube Channel You may also want to look at doing some children’s Yoga to give a peaceful moment to your day. https://awakeandmindful.com/best-kids-yoga-videos-on-youtube/ DON’T FORGET, IT’S THE LONGEST DAY OF THE YEAR ON SUNDAY 21ST JUNE! THE SUN WILL RISE AT 4.35 AM AND WILL NOT SET UNTIL 21.33PM. HOW MANY HOURS OF DAYLIGHT WILL THAT BE? |

Other ideas:
|
Take the time to read a good book. Why not find an article on Newsround (https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround) and have a chat with a parent/carer about it to find out their point of view. Don’t forget, if you want more ideas for things to do, there are a whole range of activities on the school website. There are also lots of links to other websites, broadcasts, and resources for you to make the most of. We have particularly been enjoying David Walliams weekday stories and having Audible, full of lots of great e-books/audio books, available for free. There’s also the weekly Lego challenge on the school website, we look forward to seeing the results. |
Note for parents/carers:
We have had lots of very positive feedback from children completing their work at home and it has been great to see the fruits of their labours via e-mail.
We recognise this is a very different time for everyone and we’ve had some messages asking about how to organise the day. For more information about this, have a look at our school website (https://www.nettleham-junior.lincs.sch.uk/page/?title=Distance+Learning&pid=99)
Also do remember that we can print out worksheet packs for you to collect from school.
Don’t forget, you can always share work with us using Year3@Nettleham-Junior.Lincs.sch.uk or you could create a scrap book of all your child’s work as a record of their home school journey.
